Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father passed away, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become cleaner or waitress to help them be able to survive. Ruth was a student at the school located in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. Her school was closed in two short years to pursue acting. The path she chose did not come without challenges. In New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines, her dream of performing in the theater she longed to do was abyssal. Then in NYC, she worked at a bar, as the check-in lady before resigning after a few months and moving to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a steady actor. She earned money by performing during the daytime working as an Usherette. Also, she studied drama. She eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
